Community Service 2004-2005

At-risk Latino Diabetes Prevention Program:

A novel program developed and run by residents that looks at ways to reduce the incidence of diabetes among the Latino population of Lancaster by targeting persons at-risk based on family history.

Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Lancaster County:

A national program which pairs adults with children for companionship, mentoring and life skills.

Mandy Fannin, MD – Resident

ChildProtect:

A program started by LGH to provide free immunization to low-income persons without insurance.

Alan Peterson, MD – Faculty (Medical Director)

Community Service Elective:

One month of elective time that can be used to volunteer at one or more community service agencies. Residents also prepare a presentation about their experience. Past electives have involved the study of the migrant farm worker population and a survey of social service agencies in Lancaster City.

Available to residents upon request as an elective

Daddy Boot Camp:

A program through the LGH wellness center that enlists new fathers to become familiar with infant child care. A resident helps by demonstrating important fathering techniques such as diapering and feeding a newborn.
 
Domestic Violence Prevention Project - FHS:

A screening program started by a resident to screen all women for domestic violence, includes DV education for residents and faculty and involvement of the FHS social worker.

F&M Premedical Preceptorship Program:

The Franklin and Marshall Preceptorship Program pairs residents with college students interested in careers in the health professions. Over the course of a semester, students spend time shadowing their preceptors and other residents on the wards, in the clinic, and in the ER. Social events are held several times a year to allow preceptees and preceptors to interact on an informal basis. Future plans include developing a resident-led roundtable series on topics such as navigating the medical school application process. Two-thirds of LGH residents participated in the fall of 2002.


Habitat for Humanity:

A national program providing low-cost housing for people in need.
 
Keep Lancaster Beautiful:

Keep Lancaster Beautiful is an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful primarily focused upon litter prevention, beautification and environmental education.

Lancaster Day Care Center:

The mission of the Lancaster Day Care Center is to provide high quality, affordable child care to low and moderate income families, many of whom are in transitional living situations.

Christine Stabler, MD – Faculty (Physician Volunteer)

Lancaster Science & Engineering Fair:

An annual event, showcasing science projects by local students and judged by volunteer judges.

Local School Health Education:

Various talks centered on smoking cessation (TAR Wars), puberty and early sexual education and life skills development.
 
Low Birth Weight, Preterm Labor PI project:

A resident run, faculty supervised project looking at various risk factors for preterm labor and ways to reduce those risk factors

PA Coalition to Prevent Teen Pregnancy:

A statewide nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing adolescent pregnancy and improving the lives and futures of adolescent parents and their children.

Christine Stabler, MD – Faculty (Board Member)

Reach out and Read Program:

A program brought to Lancaster 5 years ago to increase interest in reading among our pediatric-aged patients. The program involves providing free books at well-child visits, used books that can be taken home and volunteers reading to children in the waiting room.

Sertoma Club:

The Sertoma Club of Lancaster, formed in 1952, is the largest of all the clubs which make up Sertoma International, a world-wide civic organization. The goal of the Sertoma Club is to provide SERvice TO MAnkind. The Sertoma Club of Lancaster has also adopted as its mission the beautification and upkeep of Lancaster's Long's Park, funding of Sertoma's Kid's Kamp, and other civic donations and support. The Sertoma Chicken Bar-B-Que, an annual fund-raiser, is the largest in the world as certified by the Guinness Book of World Records.

Stephen Olin, MD - Faculty

SETEBAID:

Setabid (diabetes spelled backward) is a camp that helps children cope and take control of their diabetes. The camp is run over a one week period and involves games, typical camping activities and medical instruction.

SHARE of Lancaster County:

A pregnancy loss support group which includes traditional support groups, in-hospital grief support, a group memorial service every three months and a yearly memorial walk.

 

Steven's College of Technology:

Faculty assists and advises the nursing staff and provides medical evaluations and coverage for the student athletes. Residents provide coverage at sporting events.

Mark Rast, MD – Faculty (Physician Liaison/Advisor Student Health)

United Way Success by Six:

A committee of health care providers looking at the feasibility of a County Health Department for Lancaster County.

Vantage House:

A unique long-term drug rehab program for women and children. Residents are primarily involved in providing educational health related talks to the women clients and organizing activities for the children. The residency also provides Christmas gifts each year.

Water Street Rescue Mission

A Monday evening free clinic available to homeless persons and uninsured persons living in Lancaster County. The clinic was started over 10 years ago by an LGH resident and has been continually staffed since that time.

Additional opportunities include but are not limited to:

  • Healthy Beginnings Plus - Faculty and residents were involved intimately in the creation of the Healthy Beginnings Plus program in Lancaster County and continue to provide medical input to the Healthy Beginnings staff to provide prenatal services to underserved women (monthly meetings).
  • March of Dimes - Residents have served on the board of the March of Dimes at their monthly meetings providing physician input.
  • Nuestra Clinica - Residents were intimately involved in the creation of, development of and programming for Nuestra Clinica, a social service and substance abuse rehabilitation program for the Spanish American community.
  • Physicians for Social Responsibility - Residents have been actively involved in organization that promotes the health of the nation, especially in prevention of pollution and nuclear accident.
  • Project CHILD - Residents and faculty have served to develop the Project CHILD with the Bridge of Hope Program to develop an adoption program whereby the local community and religious organizations would adopt families at risk. Provide supervision, input, support and guidance to prevent child abuse, substance abuse, and financial devastation.
  • Quarryville Fest - Residents and faculty, as well as staff have manned a booth to provide medical information, blood pressure screenings and health education to the Quarryville community. In addition to this they have staffed the medical tent at the Quarryville bike race each year providing care for minor injuries, assessment for dehydration and general medical services.
  • Quarryville Patient Info Newsletter - Residents have at least an hour per month developing a quarterly newsletter that is available to residents of the Quarryville community. This focuses on areas of interest in health news and health education, including safety, prevention and methods of access to health care.
  • Safe Kids - Residents have been intimately involved in the Safe Kids program, which provides farm safety education to the people of Lancaster County. This includes bide safety programs, education meetings and community education talks to prevent farm injuries in children (7 hours/month).
  • Shelter for Abused Women - Residents have provided fund raising campaigns, medical advise and oversight, and medical care for the Shelter for Abused Women in Lancaster County.
  • Smoking Cessation Classes in Quarryville - Residents have provided the hour-long classes to promote Smoking Cessation for the residents of the Southern end of Lancaster County. They have developed the program and continue it on an ongoing basis.
