General Information
Lancaster General Hospital's Family Practice Residency Program sponsors a fellowship in Faculty Development. This community based, university-affiliated program was established in 1969. Among the first residency programs to be approved, it now has 13 residents in each of three years. Fellowships in Geriatrics and Palliative Care Medicine are also sponsored by the program.
The program is affiliated with Temple University School of Medicine and has formal associations with the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, the Penn State University School of Medicine at Hershey and Drexel School of Medicine. Medical students from each of these schools rotate through the Family and Community Medicine Department on a regular basis.
Faculty Development Fellowship
The Faculty Development Fellowship is unique to out program. It showcases flexibility and enables the Fellow to develop faculty skills. Our fellow spends 50% to 60% of his or her time serving as junior faculty, providing direct patient care and teaching on our inpatient and outpatient services. The Fellow also devotes 40-50% of their time enhancing skills in an Area of Concentration.
Recent fellowship foci have included developing hospitalist skills, curriculum development, advanced clinical and teaching skills in maternal child health, the development of a diabetes management program, and developing a model sports medicine curriculum. A great majority of our fellowship graduates move directly into family medicine faculty positions. The base salary is $63,000 and fellows are eligible for all benefits offered by the hospital.

Duties

Serve as attending physician on family medicine inpatient service at the Lancaster General Hospital for 1-2 months

Serve as attending physician on obstetrics service at the Lancaster General Women & Babies Hospital for 1-2 months

Precept at the ambulatory care unit 2 half days per week

Develop a continuity practice at the Family Health Service

Night call schedule: 1 weeknight/week, 1 weekend/month covering the obstetrics and medicine services

Elective clinical rotations depending on fellow's interests

Research and teaching activities depending on fellow's interests. At least one paper or presentation is expected in the course of the year
Fellow Selection Criteria
Interested candidates must be graduates of an ACGME family practice residency program and certified (or eligible for exam) by the American Board of Family Practice. Candidates must be interested in teaching family medicine to medical students and residents and must have demonstrated skills in this area. In addition, evidence of leadership and administrative skills is required. Ideally, candidates should be proficient in common family practice procedures including low-risk obstetrics, enometrial sampling, colposcopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, casting and splinting. Minimal deficiencies may be remediated during elective rotations.
