A Message From The Program Director
Welcome!
We are pleased that you are interested in geriatric fellowship training at Lancaster General Hospital. With the combination of the high quality health care services available in our region and the growing elderly population in the Lancaster area, we are sure that you will build excellent geriatric skills during your training here.
The mission of our fellowship program is to prepare you to provide excellent care to the elderly, whether you choose to do this as part of a broad spectrum practice, or as a geriatrician focused on care of the elderly. In addition to developing strong geriatric clinical skills, you will develop skills in teaching, application of evidence-based medicine to geriatric care, medical directing in nursing homes, community education and leadership, and geriatric-based scholarly activity.
Each of our faculty has developed a passion for the care of the elderly, some after many years of broad-spectrum practice, and some right out of residency training. We hope to instill this passion in our fellows, whatever their future practice goals may be. Most of our fellowship graduates are now teaching geriatrics to others, and many are involved in a wide variety of advocacy, leadership, administrative, and clinical roles.
Our fellowship program is ideally positioned for geriatric training and education. We are affiliated with a nationally recognized Family Medicine Residency Program and fellows have the opportunity to interact with and teach residents. Lancaster General Hospital is a successful not-for-profit hospital with many recent accomplishments and accreditations, including being named by U.S. News and World Report in 2007 as a top 50 hospital in Geriatrics and Cancer care. A full spectrum of high-quality specialty medical providers and services are available to assist in the care of our patients.
Lancaster County has a large and growing elderly population, with the number of residents age 50 and older expected to increase by over 12% in the next 5 years. This growth has led to a large population of elderly seeking high-quality geriatric care in all settings, from independent living at home, assisted living and skilled nursing facilities, to the acute care hospital and hospice settings. Our faculty and fellows are uniquely positioned to provide this much-needed care and to teach, role model, and provide leadership to the local health care community.
We are seeking fellowship candidates, either family medicine or internal medicine trained, who would like to more fully develop their skills in geriatric medicine and experience the personal and professional satisfaction that is a natural effect of caring for the elderly. Please review our website to learn more about our program, and feel free to contact us for more information.
Sincerely,
Matthew J. Beelen
