Medical Student Opportunities

The emphasis of your experience will be on exposure to the broad spectrum of the specialty of family medicine. This will be achieved though seeing patients independently, which provides patient-centered learning. In addition, there are clinical and didactic sessions on multiple topics relevant to family medicine. There are also opportunities for impromptu teaching sessions while seeing patients. The student will be exposed to as many residents and faculty as possible so that they may see different learning styles. Call is not required, but both medicine/ peds and obstetrical call is available.

There are two types of rotations for medical students:
  • Third-year required rotations: Students from University of Pennsylvania, Drexel College of Medicine, Penn State Hershey & Temple. This is an outpatient rotation which consists of rotations in Family Health Service, Quarryville, Hospice of Lancaster County, Sports Medicine clinic and Obstetrics clinic.

  • Fourth-year elective rotations: You may either do a subintership or a combination inpatient/outpatient rotation. The outpatient rotation is similar to the third-year rotation. The subintern is an integral part of the inpatient team and carries their own patient panel.
You will be assigned one attending to be your advisor/mentor for your entire four weeks of the rotation. He/she will give you an orientation to the program and then meet with you three times during your stay here. If you would like to, this physician can act as a mentor as you pursue a career in Family Medicine or other specialty. The mentors/advisors are Mark Rast, MD, Christine Stabler, MD, Jeff Martin, MD, and Gladys Frye, MD
