Lisa Bartels, MD

Drexel University, MD
Connecticut College, BA

I grew up in Brookline, MA, a large town neighboring Boston.  There I majored in Zoology and was lucky to spend a semester studying marine life on the Great Barrier Reef.  In College I swam and played water polo, and so spent lots of time in the pool!  Medical School took me to Drexel in Philadelphia where I have enjoyed running and hiking with my dog Max and cuddling with cat Lily.  My boyfriend is happy to be staying in the greater Philly area as he is a manager and hockey coach at a rink close to Lancaster

I was born in Brooklyn, NY and was raised in the suburbs of Long Island, NY.  I always had an interest in the city though and enjoyed going to church in the South Bronx, visiting my grandparents in Brooklyn, and working summers in New York City. I went to Williams College where I studied political economy and developed my fondness for fleece and wearing khaki shorts in the winter.  It is also where my interest in medicine, community, working in less privileged urban environments, and my Christian faith really began to grow.  After college I lived in Guatemala for six months and returned to work at homeless shelter medical clinic in New York City.  Both those experiences shaped me in innumerable ways and I also met my wonderful wife-to-be, Sharon, during this time.  I went to SUNY Downstate with a desire to work in urban primary care medicine.  I left with an extra degree in public health, a love for family medicine, and a new wife.  I’m excited about living in Lancaster City and pursuing my interests in community medicine, behavioral health, and underserved urban medicine.  Sharon and I are looking forward to meeting new neighbors, cooking, grilling, and playing sports like soccer.  Hopefully we can improve our Spanish and our recipes for rice and beans and sofrito too!

I was born in India and moved to New York city at the age of 12 with my family.  I pursued a 7 year BS/MD program through Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education (partnership between City College and 6 medical schools in NY) after high school.  I developed a passion for serving the underserved and primary care medicine through my experience in the program, living in the city, as well as my growing faith in following Christ.  Between my 3rd and 4th year of medical school I took time off to pursue a Masters in Public Health with a focus on Urban and Immigrant Health.  In 2008 I married my wonderful husband who has very similar passions and life–long goals as me, and we are thrilled to be at Lancaster General together as residents.  We were so excited to find Lancaster City, learn more about its needs and gifts, and have an opportunity to train with residents and faculty at LGH who are passionate about Family Medicine.  Professionally, I am interested in all aspects of Family Medicine, especially adolescent health, community medicine, and improving care for the underserved.

Janell Hill, MD, PhD

Howard University, MD, PhD
Hampton University, BS

I’m a Southern girl at heart with a love for city life.  I was born and raised in Durham, NC, which is aptly nicknamed the “City of Medicine.” Capitalizing on this, I participated in numerous summer research programs beginning in my sophomore year of high school, and inspired my interest in cancer research.  I moved a few hours north to complete my undergrad education in Molecular Biology at Hampton Univ in Hampton, VA.  As I continued to enhance my research skills, I knew that a career as a physician scientist was in my future.  I continued the journey north to Howard Univ Col of Med in Washington, DC where I completed my M.D. and Ph.D degrees in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.  My research focus was cancer genetics in high-risk African American women and the identification of new breast cancer susceptibility alleles.  I chose Family Medicine because of its unique challenges with patients of all ages.  There  is also a strong need to increase research in Family Medicine and I would love to continue my genetics research in the Lancaster community.  My hobbies of reading, crafts, and shopping will surely be cultivated in my new home!

Maggie Hsin-I Lee, MD

Drexel University College of Medicine, MD
University of Massachusetts, BS, MS

I was born and raised in Worcester, Massachusetts where I was blessed with the company of my cousin and my maternal grandparents. Having been in their 80’s when they arrived in the U.S., my grandparents’ health slowly deteriorated. Throughout the course of their decade long stay, I was by their side while they were in the ER, the ICU, rehab and nursing homes.  These personal experiences ignited my interest in medicine, including alternative and complimentary therapy.  After having been in MA for most of my life, relocating to Philadelphia was quite the experience. However, I did miss the greenery of suburbia and have found nostalgic peace in Lancaster. It is good to know that family and friends are within travelling distance so that we may eat, drink and be merry. Hobbies and interests include arts and crafts, games, cooking/baking, shopping—basically anything as long as there’s good company!

Elizabeth Loomis, MD

University of Rochester School of Medicine, MD
University of Rochester, BS

I grew up in the Finger Lakes of NY, near Canandaigua, and earned a BS in Neuroscience at the University of Rochester with minors in Brain and Cognitive Sciences and Theatre.  After undergrad I spent two years in Mozambique with the Peace Corps teaching high school biology.  I then returned to the University of Rochester for medical school where I confirmed my desire to become a family physician.  I enjoy traveling, biking and being outdoors.

Chih-Chen "LUKE" Luan, MD

University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, MD
Cornell University, BS

I was born and raised in the culturally diverse, dense suburban sprawl of Central New Jersey, where new housing developments are named after the vegetation, wildlife and topographical features they replace.  After high school, I spent four years in Ithaca, NY shivering and studying Mechanical Engineering, but mostly shivering.  $160,000 and a year-long hiatus at home later, I began medical school in Pittsburgh.  I came to appreciate the Steel City, its history, its distinct culture, and mullet haircuts.  During college and medical school, I developed an interest in underserved medicine, both domestic and international, and felt that Family Medicine, because of its broad training and emphasis on primary care, was the optimal means for serving the underserved.  I believe that Lancaster’s full spectrum training will prepare me well for this kind of work.  When I am sans white coat, I enjoy reading, watching movies, listening to music, playing sports, getting involved in church, and long walks on dusty country roads.  I look forward to adding quilt-making to my list of interests.

Patrick Moreno, MD

University of Illinois College of Medicine, MD
Wheaton College, BS

Born outside Chicago, I grew up throughout the Midwest only to wind up back in Chi-town for college and Med School.  I met my life companion (Dr. Kari Oftedal) at Wheaton College before starting Medical School at the University of Illinois—Chicago.  My passion for social justice led me into the field of medicine, with a particular interest in Latino underserved populations and adolescents.  My free time is spent hopelessly rooting for the Cubs, rocking out on Rockband (expert), and renovating my house.

We’ll see how this Jersey Girl fits in Lancaster, PA!  I grew up in northern New Jersey, ventured to the Midwest during college, and survived a presidential election in Washington, DC.  My interest in medicine stems from my belief that every single individual is equally valuable and deserves excellent care.  Every patient should be treated as I would like to be treated and the medical profession allows me to actualize this belief.  My hobbies and interests include reading just about anything, sports of any kind, and date night with my husband Patrick.

Elaine Seaton, MD

Jefferson Medical College, MD
Kenyon College, BA

I’ve always been interested in medicine; and, as a small child I wanted to see and take care of everyone’s boo-boos.  The interest grew from there.  Kenyon College in Ohio for undergrad, to do pre-med coursework and major in mathematics (because math is fun).  At the beginning of  med school at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, I was sure I wanted to do surgery or OB, but to my surprise I fell in love with family medicine—with interests in adolescent care, women’s health, and obesity management and nutrition.  Outside of Medicine, my interests include martial arts and currently train in and teach Taekwondo at a YMCA in Delaware with my fiancé’.  Other interests include art—mainly oil painting and water color, going to museums and galleries.  I am also interested in/concerned about the environment and human rights.  I enjoy hiking, biking, running, cooking and gardening.

Mairead "MAGGIE" Torsney-Weir, MD

Medical College of Wisconsin, MD
Georgetown University, BA

I grew up all over the Northeast, spending my high school years in the suburbs of Philadelphia.  After studying psychology at Georgetown, I looked for a change of pace and moved to the Midwest for medical school.  After my first year in Milwaukee, I did an externship in rural Wisconsin with a family doctor, and knew I had found my career path.  I like to spend my spare time dancing (especially ballroom), reading, writing terrible short stories, traveling and baking.

Janelle Wells, MD, MPH

University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, MD, MPH
Tulane University, BS

I was born in Virginia Beach, VA, but have lived in many cities and states across the country, including a rural town in Utah, where I graduated from high school.  Following high school, I moved to the big city of New Orleans, LA where I attended Tulane University and completed a double major in  neurosciences and classical studies.  From there, I moved north to Madison, WI where I received both a medical degree and a master’s in public health.  This is also where I met my wonderful husband, Jason, who now is a pathology resident at Penn State.  While I am most drawn to full-spectrum family medicine, I have developed a specific interest in maternal-child and women’s health.  Outside of medicine, I enjoy spending time with my husband, cross-country skiing, biking, hiking, tennis, Zumba, reading, and baking.

Jill Zackrisson, MD
Medical College of Virginia, MD
The College of William & Mary, BS

I was born and raised in “Mr. Jefferson’s” wonderful town of Charlottesville, Virginia, where I developed a deep and abiding love for all things southern, despite my lack of an accent.  I attended the College of William & Mary in Virginia where, through a series of personal revelations and a quirky German bioethicist, I discovered my interest in attending medical school.  After receiving a degree in Biology, I entered the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine in Richmond.  I had the opportunity to become involved in several international medical missions during the preclinical years and developed a passion for international health and underserved medicine.  In addition, my professional interests include Maternal/Child health, Complementary/Alternative medicine and prevention.  Outside of medicine, I enjoy traveling, painting, having friends over for dinner, being an aunt, and doing just about anything outdoors.
