2nd Year Residents

Kaitlyn Beisecker-Levin, M.D.

University of Virginia
Emory University

I grew  up mostly in southwestern Virginia, with brief stints in Rhode Island and China. After high school I moved to Georgia to continue my horse vaulting (gymnastics) on the back of a moving horse) career, then stayed in Atlanta for undergrad. I moved back to Virginia for medical school, and in my third year met my wonderful husband, Matt. We enjoy being outside, spending time with friends, and renovating houses-all of which make Lancaster a perfect place for us! My interests in family medicine could best be described as broad—I enjoy everything from ob to sports to palliative care. Part of my growth during the next three years will be to discover what exactly I want to do when I grow up!

Candice M. Cavicchia, M.D.

Jefferson Medical School
Messiah College

I was born in Orange County, CA, but raised outside of Philadelphia for most of my life. I, as well as my two sisters grew up close to extended family and traveled throughout the U.S. and abroad. My family instilled in me a love of learning and drive for excellence. I knew coming out of high school that I wanted to be a physician. I had the opportunity to witness the pain, frustration and confusion that illness can bring both in the patient and in the patient’s family. The desire to work with patients and their families propelled me through my undergraduate work at Messiah College where I received a Bachelors of Science in Biology with a minor in Psychology and into medical school. I attended Jefferson Med Col of Philadelphia where I became  involved in a diabetes exercise and education program for women. In my third year of medical school I looked back at my experiences and quickly realized that there was only one choice of specialty that made sense—Family Medicine. I am looking forward to exploring a new city and being part of a great residency. I hope to pursue my medical interests in women’s health, diabetes and end-of-life issues and my personal interests in international travel, hiking, reading and cooking.

R. Scott Dent, M.D.

University of Rochester
University of Michigan

I was born and raised in Rochester, NY where my father attended medical school and where he met my mother when he was a first year student. I attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor for my undergraduate degree in Sociology and spent a lot of time volunteering in schools and prisons. After college, I joined the Teach for America program and was placed in rural south Texas, near the Mexican border, and then continued teaching elementary school in San Francisco and Oakland, CA. An interest in medicine and service  led me back home to Rochester to attend medical school where I met my wife (and now co-resident) Holly Russell. I enjoy very amateur cooking, guitar playing and photography. I love to travel and discover small towns and out of the way restaurants, as well as just relaxing and watching a baseball game. We are very happy to be part of such a strong program and residency class.

Ian M. Deutchki, M.D.

Penn State College of Medicine
Pennsylvania State University

I was born in Pittsburgh, but grew up primarily in Massachusetts. I followed in my parents’ footsteps and attended Penn State as an undergrad where I majored in PreMed  and minored in Psychology. While there I was President of the Bowling Club, cheered loudly for the football team, and met my wife Jennifer. I also received my medical degree from Penn State at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. There I developed a love of Family Medicine with particular interests in obstetrics, pediatrics, and end-of-life care. Outside of medicine my wife and I continue to enjoy bowling, tailgating, and simply being together. I am also a die-hard Pittsburgh sports fan, an avid reader, and recently an uncle to twins!!

John F. Hornick, M.D.

Medical College  of Virginia
United States Naval Academy

I was born and raised in inner-city Philadelphia before attending the U.S. Naval Academy where I was a dual major in math and physics. Upon graduation I served as an officer aboard nuclear submarines during the Cold War era. After working for many years in the civilian nuclear industry I decided to pursue a career in Family Medicine. I attended the Medical College of Virginia where I met my wife, Elizabeth. She is a nurse and we both hope to pursue our mutual dream of providing health care to the underserved—perhaps in a third world country or in the rural U.S. My interests are in international health and in developing the skills necessary to provide a full spectrum of family care. My wife and I enjoy outdoors and church-related activities, and are extremely excited about the opportunities that the Lancaster area and the Family Medicine Program have to offer.

Amy E. Howell, M.D.

Penn State College of Medicine
Franklin & Marshall College

I went to F&M for undergrad and am very excited about returning to Lancaster after 4 years of medical school in Hershey. My fiancé’, PJ runs his own construction company. He is looking forward to remodeling historic homes in Lancaster. We love travel, the outdoors, entertaining and, of course spending any spare time with friends and family. As for my interests in family medicine, I am still finding my niche in this wonderful specialty. I enjoy pediatrics, preventative care, and sports medicine.

Maryellen C. Lewis, M.D.

State Univ of New York-Syracuse
LeMoyne College, Syracuse

Up to this point, I have spent my whole life in Upstate New York, Syracuse in particular. I received my undergraduate degree from a cozy Jesuit college called LeMoyne, where I was able to pursue my academic interests as well as continue to swim competitively. I made the short move down the road to SUNY Upstate for my four years of medical school. My husband, Tyler, and I are thrilled to be starting our married life in Lancaster County. I love all of medicine, but I have a special interest in geriatrics. Things that I enjoy outside of medicine include Syracuse University basketball, family, running, Irish culture and bagels!

Stephanie S. Onguka, M.D.

Georgetown University School of Medicine
Tulane University

I was born and raised in a smaller town in Maryland but technically considered a suburb of Washington, D.C. My traveling interests began at an early age, especially to Central and South America. More recently I discovered a love for Africa, more specifically, Kenya, where I also met my husband, Andrew Onguka. We both continue to enjoy traveling, discussing faith and politics and keeping active outdoors. My career interests include international health and HIV/AIDS, both of which I intend to integrate into my family medicine career.  Andrew and I hope to head back to Kenya after completing residency.

Holly Ann Russell, M.D.

University of Rochester
Boston College

I grew up in Honeoye Falls, a small town South of Rochester where there actually is a waterfall. After college, I moved to Oakland, CA and worked for a year at a drug treatment program for adolescents. I returned to the East Coast and did basic science research at Georgetown for two years before missing human contact and moving back to Rochester for medical school. I met my soon-to-be husband, Scott at medical school; and our couples match was facilitated by the fact that we both love Family Medicine. I am especially interested in women’s and international health. I also love cooking, traveling, minor-league baseball, board games, and running.

Amanda Sloan, M.D.

Medical College of Georgia
University of Pennsylvania

I am proud to say that I was born at Lancaster General Hospital, so it’s only fitting to return for my residency training! I grew up in Lancaster and York counties, and stayed in Pennsylvania for college. After graduation I was determined to move ‘somewhere warm’, so I signed up for Teach for America in Atlanta, Georgia. I taught elementary school for two years, and remained in Georgia for medical school. There, I met my future husband, Justin. Luckily, I was able to convince him to move north, and he is currently an ER resident at York Hospital. I am very excited to pursue a career in Family Medicine, and hope to incorporate my love of teaching and community involvement into my residency training and beyond. Outside of medicine, I am an avid runner and enjoy traveling whenever I get the chance.

Esther Stultz, M.D.

Penn State Hershey College of Medicine
Gordon College

I grew up on a small farm in Waterboro, Maine. After high school, I went to Gordon College, a Christian liberal arts college in Massachusetts. I ventured even farther away from home for medical school, which was Penn State College of Medicine. My interest in Family Medicine brought me to Lancaster General to do my acting internship, and I was won over to this amazing and super-friendly and supportive residency program. My family medicine interests are broad — including OB and Women’s Health, Nutrition and Dermatology. Outside of medicine, I love being outdoors, and enjoy running, hiking, biking, skiing and snowmobiling. Spending time with family and friends is important and I also keep busy with church-related activities. I’m excited to explore Lancaster County and LGH and all they have to offer.

Elizabeth Van Aulen, M.D.

Penn State Hershey College of Medicine
Franklin & Marshall College

Having grown up in rural Lancaster County, my husband Ben and I are very excited to be moving closer to our family and friends who are all such a big part of our lives. I have always been interested in Family Medicine, and began my education at Franklin and Marshall College with a BA in Biology and a minor in music. I completed medical school at the Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey. Music has always been a big part of our lives, and at F&M I was a member of many music ensembles playing the oboe, English horn, flute and piccolo. My husband, Ben has been playing guitar for as long as he can remember and is passing along his talents by giving guitar lessons. Ben and I also enjoy athletics, traveling (especially to any place with a beach), and cooking. My interests within Family Medicine include dermatology, preventative care, and improving my ability to speak Spanish.

Janae D. Zolna McLane, M.D., MPH
(Dr. “Zolna”)
Oregon Health Sciences University
Emory College
North Dakota State University

I was raised in Minnesota and attended North Dakota State University with a major in microbiology. After surviving sub-zero temperatures and numerous blizzards, I headed to Atlanta where I received my Masters of Public Health. In search of a more temperate climate and slower pace of life, my husband and I moved to Oregon where I worked in research before starting medical school at Oregon Health and Science University. We moved to Philadelphia during my fourth year of medical school because of a job opportunity for my husband, who is a park ranger at Independence. My interests in medicine include preventive care, reproductive health, underserved populations, and healthcare reform. I enjoy spending time with my husband, hiking and camping with our dog, reading, and traveling.
