Longitudinal weekly experiences

  • Sports medicine department continuity  – weekly experiences with our athletic trainer supported primary care Sports Medicine offices.
  • Fellows' sports medicine outpatient continuity clinic – weekly precepted sports medicine clinic with own patients. 
  • Collegiate student health – weekly continuity clinic in primary specialty at 1-2 of our multiple collegiate student health and wellness centers.
  • Team physician – dedicated high school and shared college(s) for sports coverage, training rooms and pre-participation physical experiences at high school, DI, DII and DIII colleges/universities.  
  • Fellowship conferences – weekly didactics with additional educational opportunities for workshops, conferences and teaching family medicine resident MSK education.  
  • Research/Academic time – weekly time devoted to inquiry and development of research, writing, cases and scholarly projects.  

Block schedule

  • Orientation – 4-weeks familiarizing with LGH facilities and Epic EMR, integrating into sports medicine offices, beginning role as team physician for high schools and colleges, understanding ATC role, increased didactics for physical exams, diagnostic and interventional ultrasound. 
  • Orthopedic sports medicine – 8-weeks, split into two 4-week blocks, with office and OR exposure; there will be 2-weeks dedicated to joint arthroplasty.
  • Physical and occupational therapy – 4-weeks with PT and OT for physical exams, exercise therapy, gait analysis, manual therapy and modalities, orthoses, return to sport progressions.
  • Musculoskeletal radiology – 4-weeks with radiology for comfort in reading and reviewing radiographs, CTs, MRIs and diagnostic ultrasounds. 
  • Pain management and spine surgery – 2-week blocks with Interventional Pain Management and 2-week block with spine surgery. 
  • Hand specialty – 4-weeks with orthopedic and/or plastic surgeon hand specialists as well as hand therapy. 
  • Foot and ankle and podiatry – Two 2-week blocks for orthopedic foot and ankle surgeon and podiatrists.
  • Youth sports – 4-weeks with pediatric orthopedic experiences and pediatric concussion clinic focused on complex and prolonged recoveries. 
  • Medicine – 6-weeks split with cardiology, neurology, pulmonology, and/or rheumatology/bone health clinic. 
  • Sports performance – 4-week block with sports nutrition and sports psychology. 
  • Electives – a 4- and 2-week elective with additional options to include: away rotations, research, sports performance, integrative medicine, OMT, holistic therapy, and others.  

Other Experiences

Fellows will serve as medical leads at multiple local and regional mass participation events including marathons, cycling races, soccer tournaments, track and field events, and Special Olympics.
